PAL Camcorders Explained: In the U.S., the TV color system is known as NTSC, which

uses 525 scan lines at 30 frames per second. But there are two other television standards,

called PAL and SECAM, used in the rest of the world. Unlike NTSC, PAL uses 625 scan lines

at 25 frames per second. So, while camcorders can record video anywhere in the world, it’s

where that video is played back that makes a difference. PAL camcorders are designed to

play back in countries that support the PAL color system—such as Europe, China, the Middle

East, and South Africa. This means that these camcorders—with their different signals

and frame rates—do not play back on American televisions. There are no multi-standard

camcorders; they are either NTSC or PAL. Variations to these standards also exist, such as

PAL-B, PAL-I (United Kingdom), SECAM-D (China), and SECAM-L (France).
